Menengai Crater is located just outside Nakuru town. It is known as a place with a strong history and many local stories. A long time ago, a battle took place here between the Ilpurko Maasai and the Ilaikipiak Moran, also known as the Maasai.
The Ilpurko won the fight over grazing land. The crater got its name from a Maa word that means “the dead.” This is because people believe the steam rising from the crater are the spirits of warriors who died in the battle and are trying to reach heaven. The losers in the battle were said to be thrown over the edge of the crater.
Some people believe the crater is haunted by bad spirits that make people disappear. Others say it is a very spiritual place where many go to pray and think quietly. Visitors often say they feel a strong presence of God while there.
There are stories about people going missing after visiting the crater. Some return confused, not knowing what happened. Others have claimed to see strange things like spirit people farming on the crater floor and doing work like planting, harvesting, and even using tractors, all in less than an hour. There is also a story of a flying umbrella rising from the crater during a heavy rain.
Locals nearby say they have seen a figure that looked like the devil riding a motorcycle at the top of a place called Devil’s Hill, also known as Kirima Kia Nagoma, which is near the crater.
The Menengai volcano was formed around 200,000 years ago, and the crater itself formed about 8,000 years ago. Menengai is one of the best-preserved volcano craters of its kind in the world.
The caldera is filled with thick lava rock and sharp ridges, and there is very little soil inside. Menengai Crater is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north of Nakuru town.
