Samburu National Reserve – Unique Wildlife Safaris & Cultural Tours in Kenya

Samburu National Reserve is located about 200 miles north of Nairobi, in the dry and hot plains of northern Kenya. It lies just a few kilometers north of the equator and borders Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves.

The reserve was established in the late 1960s, at a time when much of Kenya’s green areas turned into dry bushland, with large rocks and acacia trees. The Ewaso Ng’iro River runs through the reserve and is the main source of water for wildlife in the area.

Even though Samburu has a dry and semi-desert climate, it is one of the best safari destinations in Kenya. The area is full of wildlife, including animals that are not commonly seen in other parts of Kenya.

Some of the special animals in Samburu include the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx. These five animals are sometimes called the “Samburu Special Five.” The reserve is also home to elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and many birds.

Samburu became world-famous through the story of Joy and George Adamson, who raised a lioness named Elsa in the area. The story was shared in the book and movie Born Free, which made the reserve well known around the world. Today, many people visit Samburu to see the place where this story happened.

The reserve is also named after the Samburu people, who live in the region. They are semi-nomadic and are known for their colorful dress, traditional jewelry, and cattle-keeping lifestyle.

Visitors can learn about their culture and way of life through guided village visits. Camels, introduced during ancient Arab trade, are common in the area, and camel safaris are a popular way to explore the reserve.

One of the most famous animals from Samburu is a lioness named Kamunyak, who was known for adopting orphaned Oryx calves. This unusual behavior made headlines and brought more attention to the reserve.

Samburu National Reserve continues to be one of Kenya’s top safari parks, offering great wildlife viewing, unique cultural experiences, and beautiful natural surroundings.
