Walking safaris in Lake Nakuru National Park are one of the exciting activities you can enjoy while visiting. To take part in this activity, you must be accompanied by a ranger from one of the park offices. You will first drive to the more adventurous areas of the park, leave your car in a safe place, and then continue the walk with your guide and ranger. The ranger will be armed for your safety in case any animals come too close.
The park is large, so the walking safari is done in sections. You will walk in some areas, then drive for a while, and walk again in a different area. Your guide knows the safe walking spots and will plan the best route. Walking safaris are very rewarding because they allow you to get much closer to the animals and nature than you would while sitting in a car.
Lake Nakuru National Park was first declared a bird conservation area in 1957. It was mainly created to protect the birds around Lake Nakuru, especially the famous flamingos. This also helped to reduce pollution in the lake and protect the natural habitat.
Because of this, Lake Nakuru is a special place for bird lovers. It is home to more than 400 bird species, including Goliath herons, hammerkops, pied kingfishers, white pelicans, Hottentot teals, starlings, African fish eagles, and many more. Some rare birds you may also see include the long-tailed widowbird, Rufous-throated wryneck, Red-capped lark, and shining sunbird.
The park also has beautiful natural features such as escarpments, steep rocky hills, thick forests, and scenic viewpoints. From these viewpoints, you can see other nearby attractions like Nairobi, Hell’s Gate National Park, and Naivasha National Park. There is also a waterfall inside the park.
All of this makes Lake Nakuru one of the most visited parks in Kenya. Visitors can enjoy many activities here, such as walking safaris, bird watching, camping, and game drives.
