Ethnic Groups & Languages in Kenya – Kenya is home to many ethnic groups, each with its own language, customs, and way of life. The Kikuyu, Kamba, Meru, and Nyika people live in the fertile central highlands of Kenya, where farming is common.
These groups speak different languages but also use Swahili and English, which are the official languages of Kenya. The Luo people live near Lake Victoria, in the western part of the country.

Lake Nakuru National Park is located near Nakuru city, which is one of the oldest towns in Kenya. Many people live in this area, but the most well-known ethnic group around Lake Nakuru is the Maasai.

The Maasai People
The Maasai are a semi-nomadic group that lives in parts of Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are widely recognized for their rich culture, traditional clothing, and close relationship with nature.
Many Maasai communities live near national parks, and they often work in tourism and conservation.
The Maasai speak Maa, a language from the Nilo-Saharan family. They also speak Swahili and English, which are taught in schools and used in daily life.
The Maasai population is estimated to be about 900,000. Even though modern life is changing their lifestyle, many Maasai still follow their old traditions.
Maasai Homes & Villages
Traditional Maasai houses are called inkajijik. These homes are built by women using mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung. The houses are usually round or oval in shape.
The village is surrounded by a protective fence called enkang, which is built by men to keep cattle safe from wild animals.
Clothing & Food
The Maasai wear colorful clothes called shuka. Red is the most common color, but they also wear black, blue, or patterned fabrics.
Their food mainly comes from cattle, and includes milk, butter, meat, honey, and even fresh blood, sometimes mixed with milk and drunk from a container called a calabash.
